  • Ethology is widely cited in AI and DAI. However, if one takes a closer look at what the searchers from these fields expect from ethology, one may find at best models of behaviors, and at worse examples or anecdotes borrowed from the wildlife. But these models, as well as these observations, have not been built anyhow : to adopt or use them should urge the computer scientists towards changing the direction of their research methodologies by taking into account the prior characteristic of Ethology, which is to be able to conciliate explanatory discourses that are both reductionnist and intentionalist. We present in this paper a few features of this approach, and show briefly how it can be interesting for DAI, both for designing agents and building artificial organizations.
  • Keywords : ethology, agent-oriented design, artificial life
