Modeling and Evaluating Novel Networked Communications Systems

This dissertation synthetically describes research activities conducted in the last five years at the LIP6, Université Pierre et Marie Curie, highlighting the principles motivating the researches and the scientific glue across the topics. The scope is broad, ranging from wired to wireless networks, with different methodologies, from applied game theory to experimental research. More precisely, the dissertation addresses what we refer to as the arising diversity in networking problems, being it the set of paths available to independent routing nodes, the available logical interfaces to communication endpoints, the set of possible network locations where to cache contents, the different ways to share a spectrum between independent antennas, the location where to migrate virtual machines, etc. From the one hand, we argue that when the decision-making involves multiple stakeholders such situations should be modeled using rational concepts brought by non-cooperative and cooperative game theory, with simplicity and implementability as drivers of the theoretical models. From the other hand, we propose methods to design novel network protocols able to profit from this diversity, in order to allow, for instance, detecting crowded spot formation in urban environment, disjoint subflow forwarding at the Internet scale to augment transport connection performance, displacing virtual machines across the globe seamlessly, planning a pervasive deployment of virtual networks and virtualization servers.
