We present an overview of basic algebraic properties of semi-rings and dioids, in particular those related to : - extensions of the concept of linear dependence and independence and their connections with the so-called bideterminant ; - the characterization of eigenvalues and eigen-semi-modules of matrices. Various applications of the general results obtained are described : data analysis, preference analysis and algebraic approaches to some discrete event systems.
