Tidal dynamic SDN networks: a machine-learning optimizer and a testbed04/30/2018

ABSTRACT In general, humans follow a routine with highly predictable daily movements. For instance, we commute from home to work on a daily basis and visit a selected set of places for commercial and recreational purposes during the night and weekends. Such regular behavior creates predictable spatio-temporal fluctuations of traffic patterns. A similar concept applies to enterprises with distant sites that have to be connected by a private WAN: also in this case, most of the times, we can identify a daily traffic profile that can be used for bandwidth calendaring. The first part of this talk shows how to use machine learning to predict tidal traffic variations in a mobile metro-core network. The predictions can be used in on-line routing decisions. Results demonstrate that the prediction-based resource assignment matches almost perfectly routing based on perfect, oracle-like traffic. The second part of the talk will present the demo of a transport-SDN control plane based on a network orchestrator and an SDN controller which provides dynamic (calendaring-based) network slicing for enterprise-networking services and mobile metro-core networks.
Biography: Guido Maier received his Laurea degree in Electronic Engineering at Politecnico di Milano (Italy) in 1995 and his Ph.D. degree in Telecommunication Engineering at the same university in 2000. Until February 2006 he has been researcher at CoreCom (research consortium supported by Pirelli in Milan, Italy), where he achieved the position of Head of the Optical Networking Laboratory. On March 2006 he joined the Politecnico di Milano as Assistant Professor. In 2015 he became Associate Professor. His main areas of interest are: optical network modeling, design and optimization; SDN orchestration and control-plane architectures; WAN optimization. He is author of more than 100 papers in the area of Optical Networks and Networking published in international journals and conference proceedings (h-index 19) and 6 patents. He is currently involved in industrial and European research projects. In 2016 he co-founded the start-up SWAN networks, spin-off of Politecnico di Milano. He is editor of the journal Optical Switching and Routing and TPC member in many international conferences. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE Communications Society.
