Title:
Networks are getting smart: SDN and machine learning applied to network automation

Abstract:
Nowadays, softwarization is radically modifying the way networks are controlled and managed. On one side, Software Defined Networking allows researchers to “open the box” of the control system, giving them direct access to the methods and techniques that automate the network behavior. On the other side, machine learning provides the new material to “fill the box”, with a number of novel algorithms that allow to achieve very high performance in optimization of resource assignment and adaptation to traffic variability.
In this talk, the research activity on network automation via SDN and machine learning carried out at the Bonsai Lab of Politecnico di Milano will be presented. In particular, the talk will focus on a metro-network environment, in which a set of metro nodes supporting an edge cloud infrastructure is interconnected by a metro optical network. This is the scenario studied in the EU project Metro Haul. We will describe the main task of our research group in the context of the project, i.e. the development of a resource-planning module based on machine learning. We will report results achieved so far, including demos and papers, and mention ongoing studies about VNF-placement for G5 C-RAN.

Bio:
Guido Maier received his Laurea degree in Electronic Engineering
at Politecnico di Milano (Italy) in 1995 and his Ph.D. degree in Telecommunication Engineering at the same university in 2000. Until February 2006 he has been researcher at CoreCom (research consortium supported by Pirelli in Milan, Italy), where he achieved the position of Head of the Optical Networking Laboratory. On March 2006 he joined the Politecnico di Milano as Assistant Professor. In 2015 he became Associate Professor. His main areas of interest are: optical network modeling, design and optimization; SDN orchestration and control-plane architectures; WAN optimization. He is author of more than 100 papers in the area of Optical Networks and Networking published in international journals and conference proceedings (h-index 21) and 6 patents. He is currently involved in industrial and European research projects. In 2016 he co-founded the start-up SWAN networks, spin-off of Politecnico di Milano. He is editor of the journal Optical Switching and Routing and TPC member in many international conferences. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE Communications Society.
