Understanding and Validating Database System Administration
Wednesday, October 12, 2005Ricardo BIANCHINI Associate Professor ('Université de Rutgers)
In this talk, I will first characterize the typical database administrator tasks, testing environments, and mistakes, using results from an extensive survey we have conducted of 51 experienced administrators. Given the results of this survey, I will next describe our system support to validate the administrator actions before they are made visible to applications or users. After describing our prototype implementation, I will show results demonstrating that the prototype can hide and detect the major classes of administrator mistakes. I will conclude with a set of lessons learned in implementing system support for validation in multiple types of systems.
