Research activity

My scientific interests are in the area of networked systems, with an emphasis on mobile wireless systems. The central question driving much of my activities is: “what are the principles underlying the design of efficient wireless networks?” Scalability, spontaneity, adaptability, and dynamically changing topologies constitute some of the keywords that must be considered in the deployment of future user-driven networks. In the latest years, I have focused my research on topics related to the date tsunami that we have been observing in the latest years. As a matter of fact, the capabilities of mobile networks allow experiencing pervasive high data rates everywhere, enabling applications that would have been inconceivable only 10 years ago. Driven by the increasing popularity of smart mobile devices and the introduction of affordable data plans by cellular operators, global mobile traffic is booming. In the latest four years, data traffic grew nearly three times, being expected to grow additionally 10-fold between 2016 and 2021. In this context, my research focuses on understanding the behaviors of such networks and on designing algorithms and protocols to address specific problems when mobility comes at play.
