Titre français : Du Jardin des Hasards aux Jardins de Données: une approche artistique et multi-agent des interfaces homme / systèmes complexes
Titre anglais : From the Garden of Chances to Data Gardens: an artistic and multi-agent approach to human / complex systems interfaces
Abstract : This work is at the confluence of Distributed Artificial Intelligence, Artificial Life and Electronic Art. It deals with the design of visual representations aimed at making the interface in real time between human users and complex systems. Being composed of interacting entities that dynamically organize and whose evolution is emergent or chaotic, therefore potentially unpredictable, these systems can generally not be observed directly. New visualization means must therefore be developed. By so doing, the aim is threefold: controlling the current state of the system in a technical context, so as to enable the command of the system; analyzing the processes governing the evolution of the system in a scientific context, so as to design systems with similar properties; using the creative properties of complex phenomena in an artistic approach for the construction of evolving works.
We addressed these issues by developing a generic platform enabling to design interfaces for the interaction with complex systems. A multiagent system is used to retrieve data describing the functioning of a complex system, to filter and organize hierarchically, before building a sensible representation for the user.
The platform has been used in an artistic approach, with the Garden of Chances project. It aims at evoking, in a visual and sonorous form, the meteorological conditions of a distant place, using an artificial ecosystem with which the user can interact as a medium. More than its esthetic qualities, we demonstrated the efficiency of the artistic image to represent the meteorology. The reflection conducted on the design of adaptive and evolving interfaces for the representation of complex systems has lead to the definition of the industrial project of Data Gardens, which is its extension.
