Titre / Title: Which Applications for the Information Highway?

Résumé : Dans un futur plus ou moins proche, de nombreuses applications emprunteront l'autoroute de l'information. Les grandes questions que l'on se pose aujourd'hui concernant ce futur sont :

'Quelles applications pour l'autoroute de l'information? Existent-elles déjà? '
'Qu'attendent les futures applications de l'"information highway"? '

Ce papier présente notre vision des différentes applications qui feront partie de l'environnement des différents utilisateurs lorsque l'"information highway" deviendra accessible à tous. Il classifie ces diverses applications et détermine en fonction de cette classification, des besoins et des exigences différents sur les réseaux. Il conclut sur le débat "Qui doit être prêt le premier: les applications ou les réseaux?"

Abstract : In the near future, a lot of applications will use the information highway. The issues concerning this future are:

'Which applications for the information highway? Do they already exist?'
'What are the expectations of those applications on the information highways?'

This paper presents our view on the different applications that will be part of our environment when the information highway will become accessible to everybody. It classifies these applications and determines, using this classification, different needs and requirements on the network. It concludes on an open issue: who has to be ready first: the applications or the network?
