Titre / Title: Ranks of binary relations

Résumé : Cet article a pour but de clarifier la notion de rang d'une relation binaire. En effet, plusieurs définitions du rang coexistent dans la litterature et deux d'entre elles n'ont jamais été distinguée. Nous les appelons le rang et le rang non ambigu. Les résultats que nous exposons concernent la comparaison de ces deux rangs. Nous montrons que ces deux définitions sont vraiment différentes, même sous des conditions très retrictives sur la structure algébrique des semigroupes.

Abstract : This paper clarifies the notion of rank of a binary relation. Indeed several definitions cohabit in the literature and two of them have never been distinguished. We call them the rank and the unambiguous rank. The main results concern the comparison of these two notions. We show that the two definitions are really different, even under strong restrictive conditions about the algebraic structure of the semigroup.
